JOIN OUR RESEARCH RETREATS
A Research Retreat is a collaboration between the CelloWercken Faundation and Dat Bolwerck – centre of arts – both situated in Zutphen. For the retreat in november ’23 we also work with the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht (HKU).
FOR COMPOSERS AND CELLISTS
Cello and composition students will work in Zutphen. All parts come together in a concert program of 1,5 hour.

AS A COMPOSER YOU CAN ALSO JOIN ONLINE
We will provide in a schedule and make sure we are connected during the retreat. You can also join the presentations online.
Composition students are each required to create a composition (or sketches) in advance, drawing inspiration from the current exhibition at Dat Bolwerck. Each composition should last for 7 minutes and can be written for 1 to 5 cellos, with or without piano. These pieces can and will be tested, refined, and completed during the retreat

Research Retreat - 'Playfullness'
The theme of this course is ‘Playfullness’ after the exhibition of Jólan van der Wiel in Dat Bolwerck. Instructors are Timora Rosler (cello), Anne-Maartje Lemereis and Jeroen den Herder (cello), with Hua-Hsuan Lee serving as the collaborative pianist and study coach.
Including 2 concerts – both on HKU and Dat Bolwerck

- After application we will sent you an invoice. It is possible to pay in installments.
PREPARATION
Early october: first meeting by Zoom. Jólan van der Wiel – the guest curator – will talk about the exhibition theme “Playfulness” and there will be an open discussion about the direction, including further development of the project.
Last week of October: first composition sketches are reviewed with the teachers for playability.The compositions (whether or not in rough form) are then shared with the cellists ho will be practicing under the teachers’ guidance.
WHO CAN APPLY?

- 6 composers
Students from all years are welcome to apply. The preference will be given to the Mater students.
Full attendance on all the rehearsals and both concerts is mandatory.
CONTRIBUTION
- EUR 150,- (including VAT) – covering all classes, accommodation, and meals,excluding travel costs
- For free for composers if join the retreat online
- NB: Students from the HKU participate through a separate program that covers the costs

WE ARRANGE YOUR STAY IN ZUTPHEN
We arrange accommodations withnearby families close to Dat Bolwerck.
All our meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner, will be provided at Dat Bolwerck.
CELLO ACADEMY IN DAT BOLWERCK
The Cello Academy is situated in Dat Bolwerck, Zaadmarkt 12. It is a mixture of charming medieval times and modern art, right in the heart of the old town, just a 10-minute walk from the train station.
Have you ever been to Zutphen? If we do say ourselves: it is a delightful little town. With a charming market with cozy cafes and situated along the IJssel river – you can always find a peaceful spot to enjoy the riverbanks.
